LINCOLN,Neb. – Today, Kyle Michaelis of Lincoln is filing as a candidate for Legislative District 27. He is the only declared challenger to State Senator Colby Coash, who won election in 2008 by fewer than 80 votes.
“It’s a time for bold leadership in the Nebraska Legislature,” states Michaelis. “A state senator needs to be willing to askt ough questions and speak hard truths. Politics as usual won’t cut it when Lincoln voters send me to the State Capitol.”
As founder and managing editor of progressive political blog New Nebraska Network, Michaelis has developed a reputation for thoughtful commentary holding elected officials accountable and challenging the status quo in Nebraska politics. Michaelis is committed to upholding these same values in state government.
“We have a child welfare system in crisis where an ideological push for privatization has trumped our state’s responsibilities to children and taxpayers. At the same time, we have a tax cut debate that’s being driven by political rhetoric rather than delivering real relief to middle-class families,” states Michaelis. “We deserve better. The time for change is now.”
Michaelis, 30, has lived in Lincoln since 1999. He graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with a Bachelor’s degree in political science and English in 2004 and a Juris Doctorate in 2007. He works as an immigration officer for U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
Active in the Lincoln community, Michaelis has worked as an AmeriCorps volunteer at the former Lincoln Action Program, provided free income tax preparation through VITA, and tutored for the Lincoln Literacy Council. He is a proud Union member and serves as community representative and treasurer for the Lincoln-Lancaster County Emergency Medical Services Oversight Authority.
