Real Tax Relief For Middle-Class Families
District 27 legislative candidate Kyle Michaelis issued the following statement in anticipation of today’s third and final vote on Legislative Bill 970:
"In politics, there are few things more difficult than opposing a tax cut during an election year. But, our state needs leaders who will do what's right rather than what's easy. That's why I oppose LB970.
"This is the wrong tax cut at the wrong time. An extra $4.33 a month isn't going to help the average Nebraska family - not when it means continuing to underfund public education and forcing an even greater burden onto property taxes.
"We need a restructuring of our state's entire income tax system. It's not fair that families are paying the same tax rate as Warren Buffett when they make $54,000 a year. And, if we want young people to stay in Nebraska, they certainly shouldn't be paying the same tax rate as the 3rd richest man in the world after earning just $27,000. That’s an outrage.
"Governor Heineman has talked about these tax brackets being unfair, but he's never put forward a plan that would actually do anything about it. Voters can count on me to stand up for tax reforms delivering fairness and real relief to the middle-class.
"That's not what LB970 provides. In fact, this bill will only make the changes we need more difficult to enact by contributing to a half-a-billion dollar shortfall in the next state budget.
"A tax cut always sounds great, but this plan flies in the face of Lincoln voters’ priorities. LB970 hurts education. It hurts property taxpayers. It hurts our chances for real tax relief that will help middle-class families.
"In the Legislature, I will be an independent voice for responsible government. Most importantly, I will always put children and families first. LB970 doesn't do that. It’s an empty promise focused on election year politics and should be defeated."
