Should Stop Misleading Voters
Last
week, in an interview with KLIN radio’s “Jack & John In The Morning”, State
Senator Colby Coash dismissed criticism of his continued embrace of rightwing
extremist Ted Nugent as a distraction. Of his 2012 challenger Kyle Michaelis,
Coash specifically stated, "Kyle can't say anything about my record, so
he's going to hang his hat on this."
However, the Michaelis for Legislature campaign is more than happy to
talk about Coash’s record and only asks that the Senator himself be more honest
about it with District 27 voters.
The
Coash campaign delivered literature over the weekend touting “The Colby Coash
Record.” This literature makes two
claims that are demonstrably false and deliberately misleading:
1. “As a testament to his work in the
Legislature, Senator Coash was appointed to serve on the powerful Judiciary
Committee.”
FACT:
Coash was appointed to the Judiciary Committee in the opening days of his first
session in the Legislature. Unless
committee assignments were made based on Coash’s ability to arrange his
furniture, the Senator is insulting the intelligence of District 27 voters.
2. “Senator Coash has led the
charge for reform of Nebraska’s child welfare system…”
FACT:
Coash was the leading voice against the Legislature taking action on child
welfare reform. Throughout the 2011 session,
when 41 other State Senators understood that Governor Dave Heineman’s
privatization scheme was a failure and was hurting Nebraska’s most vulnerable families,
Coash pleaded with his colleagues that they “listen to the governor” and “listen
to our HHS leaders and trust them to do the right thing.”
Kyle
Michaelis responds, “Senator Coash’s unquestioning deference to the Governor
and HHS represented the very worst of the Legislature’s abandoning its
responsibilities to Nebraska’s children and taxpayers. If this qualifies as leading reform, Senator
Coash was leading in the wrong direction, resulting in complete chaos in our
children’s lives and tens of millions of dollars in wasteful spending.”
The
Michaelis campaign asks Senator Coash to quit deceiving District 27 voters and
assures him we’ll be happy to talk about his real record whenever he’s ready
for public debates.
